Question by Kristina R: What are some strategies writers can use in editing and proofreading their work?

What are some strategies writers can use in editing and proofreading their work?

Best answer:

Answer by Rachel
I tend to leave my work over a 24 hour period, until thoughts are fresher, because this gives me a new eye to edit my work. Then starting at the beginning and working my way through I look for awkward words which don't read easily, as my writing is important to my readership. I read out loud any areas of doubt to see if they sound right. If I haven't described something right, I try and find another way to do it. I spellcheck, grammar check and when I am happy I submit to my Helium.com account.

Occult Spells, A Nineteenth Century Grimoire

Hardcover. No dust jacket issued. Small Quarto. 208pp. Black cloth, gilt sigil on upper board, blind rules, and gilt title on the spine. Library-quality paper, sewn, Color frontispiece. 9 page Introduction, followed by a 72 page typeset transcription of the text of the grimoire, w/ explanatory footnotes, translations of the passages in Latin, etc. and a 120 page facsimile of the original manuscript, printed on special photograph paper. Frederick Hockley (1809-1885), was an occultist and Freemason with an interest in Spirituali sm who in later life was associated with the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia. Hockley's peers considered him to be one of the great occult scholars of his time. Occult Spells is an esoteric commonplace book in which Hockley recorded material on different spells, talismans, charms and such-like that he came across in rare books and manuscripts in the course of his researches. The sources that Hockley used ranged from occult classics such as Saunders' Physiognomie, and Chiromancie, Metoposcopie (1671), John Heydon's Theomagia; and Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy (1651), to obscure works like Pettigrew's Bibliotheca Sussexiana (1827), and grimoires like the Petit Albert. The spells and talismans vary as much as his sources: from Enochian invocations, through folk magic, and into the darker realms of necromancy. This is the first ever publication of Occult Spells and includes an Introduction and transcription of the text by Silens Manus, a Hockley scholar works who, i n addition to checking and restoring illegible words or phrases from original sources, Manus has added footnotes explaining obscure terms, deity names etc, and translates most of the less common non-English phrases and passages. Where possible Manus has added plates which Hockley omitted. Occult Spells offers a rare insight into the occult preoccupations of this interesting figure, whose work arguably had a profound effect on the late nineteenth century Occult Revival.

The State of Jones: The Small Southern County that Seceded from the Confederacy

In 1863, after surviving the devastating Battle of Corinth, Newton Knight, a poor farmer from Mississippi, deserted the Confederate Army and began a guerrilla battle against the Confederacy. For two years he and other residents of Jones County engaged in an insurrection that would have repercussions far beyond the s cope of the Civil War. In this dramatic account of an almost forgotten chapter of American history, Sally Jenkins and John Stauffer upend the traditional myth of the Confederacy as a heroic and unified Lost Cause, revealing the fractures within Civil-War era Southern society. No man better exemplified these complexities than Newton Knight, a pro-Union sympathizer in the deep South who refused to fight a rich man’s war for slavery and cotton.Amazon Best of the Month, July 2009: Make room in your understanding of the Civil War for Jones County, Mississippi, where a maverick small farmer named Newton Knight made a local legend of himself by leading a civil war of his own against the Confederate authorities. Anti-planter, anti-slavery, and anti-cons cription, Knight and thousands of fellow poor whites, army deserters, and runaway slaves waged a guerrilla insurrection against the secession that at its peak could claim the lower third of Mississippi as pro-Union territory. Knight, who survived well beyond the war (and fathered more than a dozen children by two mothers who lived alongside each other, one white and one black), has long been a notorious, half-forgotten figure, and in The State of Jones journalist Sally Jenkins and Harvard historian John Stauffer combine to tell his story with grace and passion. Using court transcripts, family memories, and other sources--and filling the remaining gaps with stylish evocations of crucial moments in the wider war--Jenkins and Stauffer connect Knight's unruly crusade to a South that, at its moment of crisis, was anything but solid. --Tom Nissley
Sally Jenkins and John Stauffer on State of Jones

Newton Knight is the most famous Civil War hero you’ve never heard of, because according to Mississippi legend he betrayed not only the Confederacy but his race as well. In 1863 Knight, a poor farmer from Jones County Mississippi, deserted the Confederate Armyâ€"and began fighting for the Unionâ€"after the battle of Vi cksburg. It was rumored he even started a separate Unionist government, The Free State of Jones, and for two years he battled the Confederacy with a vengeance that solidified his legend. During his life Knight was hardly regarded as a proper soldier by either side, and after his death his Mississippi backwoods grave went unstrewn with flowers. Many southerners would have preferred to spit on it, and most northerners never recognized that such loyalty to the United States could exist in Dixie. But in truth, this lost patriot was a vital actor in helping to preserve the Union.

The recovery of the life of a Mississippi farmer who fought for his country is an important story. The fact that southern Unionists existed, and in very large numbers, is largely unknown to many Americans, who grew up with textbooks that perpetu ated the myth of the Confederacy as a heroic Lost Cause, with its romanticized vision of the antebellum South. Some historians have even palpably sympathized with Confederate cavaliers while minimizingâ€"and robbing of creditâ€"the actions of southerners who remained loyal to the Union at desperate cost.

One would never know that the majority of white Southerners had opposed secession, and that many Southern whites fought for the Union. In Tennessee, for example, somewhere around 31,000 white men joined the Union army. In Arkansas more than 8,000 men eventually served in Union regiments. And in Mississippi, Newton Knight and his band of guerillas launched a virtual insurrection against the Confederacy in Jefferson Davis’ own home state.

“There’s lots of ways I’d rather die than being scared to death,” Knight said, and it was a defining statement. At almost every stage of his life this yeoman from the hill country of Jones County, Miss., took courageous stands. The grandson of a slave owner who never owned slaves, he voted against secession, deserted from the Confederate Army into which he was unwillingly impressed, and formed a band called the Jones County Scouts devoted to undermining the Rebel cause locally. Working with runaway slaves and fellow Unionists and Federal soldiers caught behind enemy lines, Knight conducted such an effective running gun battle that at the height of the war he and his allies controlled the entire lower third of the state. This "southern Yankee,” as one Rebel general te rmed him, remained unconquered until the end of the war. His resistance hampered the Confederate Army’s ability to operate, forced it to conduct a third-front war at home, and eroded its morale and will to fight.

Knight also burst free of racial barriers and forged bonds of alliance with blacks that were unmatched even by Northern abolitionists. He fought as ardently as any man for racial equality during the War, and after, during the terrifying days of Reconstruction, when his life was, if anything, even more in danger. He lived with an ex-slave named Rachel, fathering several children with her (but he never divorced his Caucasian wife, Serena), and worked on behalf of U.S. Grant’s Republican administration and against the nascent Ku Klux Klan, and envisioned a world that would only begin to be implemented a century later. Moreover, he operated in an inverted moral landscape in which fealty to country was label ed traitorous, and kinship with blacks was considered morally repugnant. He survived only because he could reload a shotgun before the smoke cleared.

As an Alabama Unionist told a Congressional committee in 1866 in testifying about the little appreciated service of southern loyalists, “You have no idea of the strength of principle and devotion these people exhibited towards the national government.” â€"Sally Jenkins and John Stauffer

Hysteria: The Biography (Biographies of Diseases)

The nineteenth century seems to have been full of hysterical women--or so they were diagnosed. Where are they now? The very disease no longer exists. In this fascinating account, Andrew Scull tells the story of hysteria--an illness that disappeared not through medical endeavor, but through growing understanding and cultural change. The lurid history of hysteria makes fascinating reading. Charcot's clinics showed off flamboyantly "hysterical" patients taking on sexualized poses, and among the visiting pr ofessionals was one Sigmund Freud. Scull discusses the origins of the idea of hysteria, the development of a neurological approach by John Sydenham and others, hysteria as a fashionable condition, and its growth from the 17th century. Subsequently, the "disease" declined and eventually disappeared.

Fort Carson breaks ground on fitness center

Aug 20, 2010

By Devin L. Fisher (Fort Carson)

FORT CARSON, Colo.-Officials held a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony Aug. 16 for a new .6 million state-of-the-art fitness center scheduled to open in January 2012.

Located at Specker Avenue and Victory Loop, the 92,496 square foot facility is a demonstration of Fort Carson leadership's commitment to providing a high quality of life for its Soldiers and their Families, said Maj. Gen. David G. Perkins, commanding general, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson.

"(This facility) is an act of dedication to our Soldiers and Families and commitment that we are all about making them the best Soldier they can be and the best Family member they can be," Perkins said.

He noted fitness is a big part of being a Soldier and that physical fitness plays into mental fitness, which ultimately plays into one's resiliency.

Perkins said plans originally called for the facility to be part of a new sports complex on Wilderness Road near Butts Army Airfield, but was relocated to its current site to ensure the Fort Carson community could take advantage of its central location within the cantonment area. The Wilderness Road sports complex will still feature a half-mile running track surrounding a soccer and playing field, and two softball fields as part of the overall project.

"When it comes to fitness, whether on the playing field or the battlefield, fitness is a huge part of our tradition as a fighting force," said Col. Robert F. McLaughlin, garrison commander.

He noted leadership's commitment to fitness is visible across the Mountain Post, as running trails and physical training pits are being constructed and fitness facilities expanded.

The new fitness center will be part of the Fort Carson Resiliency Campus, McLaughlin said. Forrest Physical Fitness Center will be transformed into the Forrest Resiliency Center, providing patient care and education, weight management, tobacco cessation, exercise instruction and community outreach services. The campus will also feature a child development center and behavioral health clinic. All three facilities are scheduled to open in March 2012.

Facility highlights
The new facility at Fort Carson is going to be one of the best fitness centers in the Colorado Springs area, according to Matt Ellis, resident engineer, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District.
The fitness center will include:
- A "zero entry" pool, that gradually slopes from the deck into the water to allow for therapy swimming, and a children's water play area
- A lap pool with diving area
- Men's, women's and Family locker rooms
- Free weight and weight machine rooms
- Cardio exercise area
- Fitness class rooms
- Climbing and bouldering walls
- Gymnasium that can be configured with one main court or three intramural courts
- Hanging one-tenth of a mile indoor running track
- Two racquetball courts
- Refreshment area
- Administration spaces
- Laundry facilities

Ellis said the facility was designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environment Design Silver ratings by using "green" materials, making it energy efficient and taking advantage of more day lighting.

Oracle PL/SQL Programming: Covers Versions Through Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (Animal Guide)

This book is the d efinitive reference on PL/SQL, considered throughout the database community to be the best Oracle programming book available. Like its predecessors, this fifth edition of Oracle PL/SQL Programming covers language fundamentals, advanced coding techniques, and best practices for using Oracle\'s powerful procedural language. Thoroughly updated for Oracle Database 11g Release 2, this edition reveals new PL/SQL features and provides extensive code samples, ranging from simple examples to complex and complete applications, in the book and on the companion website.

This indispensable reference for both novices and experienced Oracle programmers will help you:

  • Get PL/SQL programs up and running quickly, with clear instructions for executing, tracing, testing, debugging, and managing PL/SQL code
  • Optimize PL/SQL performance with the aid of a brand-new chapter in the fifth edition
  • Explore datatypes, conditional and sequential control statements, loops, exception handling, security features, globalization and localization issues, and the PL/SQL architecture
  • Understand and use new Oracle Database 11g features, including the edition-based redefinition capability, the function result cache, the new CONTINUE statement, fine-grained dependency tracking, sequences in PL/SQL expressio ns, supertype invocation from subtypes, and enhancements to native compilation, triggers, and dynamic SQL
  • Use new Oracle Database 11g tools and techniques such as PL/Scope, the PL/SQL hierarchical profiler, and the SecureFiles technology for large objects
  • Build modular PL/SQL applications using procedures, functions, triggers, and packages
If you\'re doing database application development in the Oracle environment, you\'re going to have to know PL/SQL, the company\'s extended query and update language. If you want your programs to exploit the special capabilities of Oracle software, you\'ll need to know the language well. That\'s where the third edition of Oracle PL/SQL Programming comes into play. It\'s an absolutely comprehensive reference (as well as a rather extensive tutorial) on PL/SQL, ideally suited to answering your questions about how to perform some programming tasks and reminding you of the characteristics of functions, triggers, and other elements of the database programmer\'s toolkit. The new edition covers calls to Java methods from within PL/SQL programs, autonomous transactions, object type inheritance, and the new Timestamp and XMLType data types. There\'s also more information about server internals--the way PL/SQL programs are run--than before, better enabling readers to optimize their code for fast and safe execution.

Steven Feuerstein takes care to explain, with prose and example code, the characteristics of PL/SQL elements. In explaining number conversions, for example, he explores Oracle\'s different ways of formatting numbers, then details the behavior of the to_number function under different conditions (with and without a specified format model, and with National Language Support information attached). It\'s a helpful approach that will have readers using the index to locate places in which Feuerstein mentions language elements of interest. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to use Oracle PL/SQL in all its manifestations through Oracle9i. Fundamentals of program structure (loops, cases, exceptions, etc.) and execution get attention, as do data types, transaction management, triggers, and the object-oriented aspects of the language. There\'s also coverage of calls to external Java and C programs.

The goal of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth required the development of three things: spacecraft, launch vehicles, and protective clothing. Space suits: Within the Collections of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum takes the reader through the development of the last category, the spacesuits used during this venture. Highlighting the pressure suits created during the years leading up to the lunar missions and beyond, this book features dramatic photographs of the Smithsonian’s collection, as well as never-before-published historical images of spacesuit development and testingâ€"range-of-motion studies, for example, in which researchers wore spacesuits while playing baseball and football. The book also includes a group of advanced spacesuits, which, though never used on a mission, are in many respects the most exciting suits ever created. One suit glove has steel fingernails and sharkskin pads, in an attempt to harness the abilities of the human hand.

Spacesuits are surprisingly fragile; they are made for a short lifespa n in the most extreme of conditions, and long-term survival is not part of their design process. The final chapter touches briefly on the current conditions of historic suits, how they have held up over time, the reasons for their deterioration, and the rewards and difficulties associated with caring for and preserving these very complex and iconic artifacts. From the first spacesuit designs of the 1930s through those worn on the landmark Apollo-Soyuz program of 1975, Spacesuits provides a behind-the-scenes look at the history of these remarkable creations, including some that have never before been publicly displayed.

A few nice Writers images I found:

The Letter Writer

Writers

About 50% of India\'s women are illiterate. What that means is that for everyday tasks like filling forms, operating bank accounts, and even communicating with loved ones through letters they need to take help from someone. The traditional letter-writer hence continues to be a fixture on the Indian landscape. Almost all letter-writers are men, and they generally sit with their type-writers and letter pads in front of post-offices and type forms or write the personal correspondence for people who are illiterate. H ere a woman is explaining what she wants written in her letter which the letter-writer writes out by hand.
