He is important because liberated what artists could do--spray a canvas with paint dripping from a can, etc. He encouraged the controlled use of the non-deliberate: Pollock doesn't plan where every splatter and splot goes; the artist becomes the medium through which art is created rather than being a Godlike manipulator. He also brought into question the form of art. Cut an enormous Jackson Pollock picture in two and you have two Jackson Pollock pictures. That forces the viewer to consider the arbitrary, as does his technique.
