Irving J Gill / Mosher and Drew / Venturi Scott Brown

The La Jolla branch of San Diego's Museum of Contemporary Art began life in 1915 as Ellen Browning-Scripps residence. By mid-century, the original building had been completely absorbed by insensitive expansions -- the latest of which was completed by Mosher and Drew in 1960. In the 1990's Philadelphia architect, Venturi Scott Brown, was brought in to unify the project and bring back some of Gill's original intent. Scott Brown is most famously known for his anti-Mies Van der Rohe's maxim "Less is a Bore," a play on words which altered Van der Rohe's original title, "Less is More." It's odd, then, that this architect was chosen to bring back Gill's minimalist intent. Also odd, the original entrance goes almost unnoticed in a small courtyard to the right of the new entrance.
