Social sciences are less respected and valued than conventional sciences because conventional sciences improve technology which contributes to the economy in a very capitalist/money generating way - where as social sciences do not (or not nearly as fast).

Our capitalist society emphasizes technology and money - therefore biochemistry (think drugs), engineering (think property and building), physics (think space travel and research), etc. are primary go-getters.
